Inspiring The Next Generation: BPE Launches 10 week STEAM Engineering Programme in Cork School
BPE is delighted to launch the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics) Engineering-in-a-Box programme in partnership with STEAM Education Ireland. The Engineering-in-a-Box programme will allow BPE to connect with the local community and inspire children through fun and engaging learning. The programme aims to bring students on a journey through the diverse fields of engineering. BPE engineer Hugh Twomey, is delivering the 10 week programme to 5th class in Ballintemple National School, Cork.

The topics to be covered over the 10 week period include food and process engineering, simple machines, transport, environmental, electronic and communication and biomedical. Children are tasked with challenges such as creating and presenting a bridge of 15cm capable of taking the weight of a sweet jar using only 20 lollipop sticks and 15 elastic bands and creating a free standing structure as a base for a shelter using only spaghetti and marshmallows. As well as the practical challenges students will also look into the concepts behind the designs and record their findings in journals.
