#EngWeek19: BPE Engineer The Future

BioPharma Engineering encouraged children to engineer the Ireland of tomorrow by hosting a number of fun events and activities from the Cork and Dublin offices during Engineers Week 2019.

BPE kicked off the week by delivering the last of its STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics) Engineering-in-a-Box programme in partnership with STEAM Education Ireland to the 5th class pupils in Ballintemple National School, Cork.  The Engineering-in-a-Box programme which commenced in December 2018, allowed BPE to connect with the local community and inspired children through fun and engaged learning.

The programme brought students on a journey through the diverse fields of engineering. The topics covered over the 10 week period included food and process engineering, simple machines, transport, environmental, electronic and communication and biomedical. The children were also tasked with a number of practical challenges. BPE engineer Hugh Twomey, delivered the 10 week programme over 1 hour weekly sessions.

“I thoroughly enjoying the experience and highlighting engineering as a fun, interesting and achievable career option. It was only fitting to deliver the final lesson on Engineer’s Week where the children got to present their projects they have been working on over the past number of weeks. This was a new venture for BPE and we were privileged to have supported the programme. The children responded with such enthusiasm, energy and engineering ingenuity to the lessons.  I highly recommend other companies to get on board in 2019/2020!” –Hugh Twomey, Building Services Manager

As part of the campaign, BPE also got the children of BPE employees involved by participating in an “Engineering Colouring Contest” to colour in educational engineering worksheets. BPE received nearly 30 entries and prizes were awarded for different age categories. Each participant was also presented with a special Engineers Week participation certificate.  To round off the campaign, BPE also shared employee insights into “‘Life as an Engineer” on social media throughout the week.

A recent survey by Engineers Ireland predicted that over 6,000 new jobs will be created in the engineering sector this year. As part of our ongoing campaign to promote STEAM, we were delighted to have played our part in Engineers Week and encouraging today’s children to engineer the Ireland of tomorrow” said Rachel O’Sullivan, Marketing and Communications Executive.

Engineers Week which took place from 2 – 8 March 2019, encourages children to explore the exciting world of engineering as well as highlighting the diverse career opportunities engineering offers.  The annual event is coordinated on a national basis by Engineers Ireland’s STEPS programme.
